A trend is closed swings, not a sloping average

A trend is closed swings, not a sloping average — a-trend-is-closed-swings__S-cover.png

The slope of an average is a calculation. The last closed swing is a fact.

Direct answer

Is a trend higher highs and higher lows? Yes — after those swings have closed. An uptrend is a run of closed higher highs and closed higher lows. A downtrend is the inverse. A moving average that points up is not that run. It is one number computed from a window of closes.

This page is the scan. The indicator note that already covers the average itself is An average is not a direction. The note that already covers a single level is A level needs a closed swing. I am not rewriting those pages.

How to judge

Three checks.

1. Has the last swing closed?

A high that is still printing is not a higher high. Wait for the bar that owns the extreme to close. Until then you have a candidate, not a point.

2. Do the last two closed points still make a run?

Uptrend: last closed high above the prior closed high, last closed low above the prior closed low. One higher high with a lower low is not a run. It is a mixed tape. I pass until the run is two closed facts on the same side.

3. Is the average the argument, or the swings?

If the only reason I would stay long is “MA20 is up,” I do not have a trend under this rule. I have a calculation. I can still use the average as a distance tool. I do not let it vote.

Two figures

BarionQuant Desktop training tape, GBPUSD M15. A yellow moving average slopes up. That slope is not a closed HH/HL run.
BarionQuant Desktop, Training — GBPUSD M15. The yellow average slopes up across the recovery. RSI (14) prints 64.50 on the lower pane. Equity 10,000 is the paper field. I do not read that slope as a trend. I wait for closed swings. Day numbers on the axis are 11 and 12; the month is not labelled on this crop.
EURUSD H1 from Yahoo Finance, 13–15 May 2026. Overlay names two closed lows after five bars to the right.
EURUSD H1, Yahoo Finance EURUSD=X, 13 May 2026 09:00 → 15 May 2026 09:00 UTC. The overlay on the figure names a closed low at 1.17000 then 1.16212, confirmed after five bars to the right. The dashed line is the later closed swing. It is not an order.

What we do

On BarionQuant Desktop I replay a stretch with the right side hidden and write HH/HL — closed — stay or mixed — pass. Free starts after sign-in on EURUSD. Standard is $15/mo or $150/yr; Pro is $29/mo or $290/yr. Windows only. No Mac. No broker.

TradingView will plot the same average. That is a real chart. This page is the rule I use when that average starts arguing with the last closed swing.

FAQ

Can a short moving average replace the swing count?

No. Shorten the window and you still have a calculation.

What if the last high closed higher but the last low did not?

That is mixed. I pass. I do not average the two votes.

Do I need three swings or two?

Two closed pairs on the same side is enough to call a run on this desk. A third confirms. It is not required before I write the line.

Next step

Download the Windows build. Open a finished hour. Count the last two closed swings. Do not let the average cast a vote.
