If the higher timeframe is a range, pass the middle

If the higher timeframe is a range, pass the middle — pass-inside-a-higher-timeframe-range__S-cover.png

A box has two edges. The middle is not a third edge.

Direct answer

Should you trade a lower timeframe while the higher timeframe is consolidating? Only at the edges of that box. If H1 (or H4) is travelling between two already closed extremes, an M15 breakout that never tags either edge is a skip. It is not a smaller ticket.

This is a different question from If the small timeframe looks right and the large one disagrees, pass. That page is a vote fight across M15, H1, and H4. This page is a box: the large frame has no direction, and the small frame is printing in the middle of it.

How to judge

Three checks, in this order.

1. Does the higher frame have two closed sides?

A range is not “it looks choppy.” It is two closed swing extremes that price has already tested more than once. Until those two sides exist as closed facts, you do not have a box. You have an unfinished move. The sibling note on closed swings is A level needs a closed swing.

2. Is the present bar in the middle, or on an edge?

I treat the middle as the inner half of the box. If the H1 close sits there, I do not open the 15-minute chart to hunt a break. Candleread’s public lesson says the same idea in distance: when price is far from the higher-timeframe level, close the small chart. I do not copy their 80-pip number. I use the box I actually drew.

3. Did the small-frame break even touch a side?

An M15 close through a five-bar high inside the H1 box is not permission. Permission starts when that small break is happening at the H1 side, after the H1 side has closed. Until then I log a skip: H1 box — M15 mid break — passed.

What the figure is, and is not

EURUSD H1 on MetaQuotes-Demo, 8–26 Oct 2026. After 16 Oct the hour chops inside a box. Red arrows are sibling MTF flags, not orders.
EURUSD H1, MetaQuotes-Demo (MetaQuotes Ltd.). Axis 8–26 Oct 2026. After 16 Oct the hour oscillates between roughly 1.118 and 1.126. That stretch is the box this page talks about. The red arrows around 22–23 Oct are the min-2-of-3 marks from the sibling indicator note. They are not orders, and they are not this rule.

I am not reading those arrows here. I am reading the hour that stopped making higher highs after 16 Oct and started returning to the same band. An M15 long in the middle of that band, before the hour has closed on either side, is the skip.

What we do

On BarionQuant Desktop I replay the same hours with the right side hidden. Free starts after sign-in on EURUSD. Standard is $15/mo or $150/yr; Pro is $29/mo or $290/yr. The seat includes the handbook. The build is Windows. There is no Mac, no browser replay, and no 20-year official tick pack. We are not a broker.

The method is the skip. The desk is where I walk the same box again without seeing what came next. After a skip I still write the line. Rule-break review is the place for the sitting that did not follow the line.

TradingView will let you draw the same box on a live chart. That is a real product. This page is not a ranking.

Who should skip

Skip this page if you need a buy or sell for the session that is printing now. Skip it if you wanted the indicator essay on timeframe votes. Skip it if you need Mac, or a 20-year tick archive. Stay with the tool that actually has that archive.

FAQ

Can I trade the middle if the 15-minute structure is clean?

Not under this rule. Clean on M15 inside an H1 box is still the middle.

What if the higher timeframe is trending?

Then you do not have this problem. You have the other one: do the frames agree. Open the sibling note.

Do I wait for every timeframe to align before I touch an edge?

No. Waiting for full alignment is how a cheap idea at the edge becomes a late chase. The rule on this page is only “middle of a box = pass.”

Next step

Download the Windows build. Pull EURUSD. Mark two closed H1 sides. Play the hours in the middle and practice passing them.
