Forex manual backtest: with hindsight and without

Scrolling the chart is not the same as finishing a sitting.
Direct answer
A forex manual backtest is two jobs. Dragging forward until the right side is already visible is hindsight. Hiding the right side and stepping one bar at a time through one sitting is no hindsight. Reddit r/Forex backtest threads split those two layers. Tool names are often TradingView Replay, FX Replay, Soft4FX. This page does not name-call. It uses one public EURUSD record to show the difference.
That sitting is EURUSD, H1, 2026-10-23 → 2026-10-29. The rule was written before Play: the high and low of the first hour are the range. The next bar, 02:00, printed a low of 1.12087 through 1.12102. No ticket. The record is The first H1 range is the stop. The four system lines sit in A forex trading system.
The lesson Hindsight and Blind is how the software hides the calendar. This page answers “how to manual-backtest forex.” It does not copy that lesson.
How to judge
Three checks before the product pitch.
Was the rule written first? Inventing the stop while you walk is testing memory, not a system. The three sentences for that sitting live on the lesson and on the case page.
Is the right side visible now? If you already saw 02:00 punch, then pretend you would have written 1.12102 at 01:00, that is hindsight. No hindsight means the next bar’s low was unknown before Step.
Did the sitting leave a record? A finished sitting keeps symbol, period, dates, and what happened later. Trades 0 is still a record. A scroll with no record is a new rule next week.
How we sit
Practice is the web door. The actual one-bar walk is BarionQuant Desktop on Windows. Training keeps unstepped bars behind the empty wall. That sitting used Free EURUSD H1. Windows. Not Mac.
TradingView Replay can also step one bar. It runs in a browser and needs a network. FX Replay is a cloud subscription. Soft4FX sits inside a MetaTrader terminal. Desktop is files on the PC. Free $0. Standard $15/mo or $150/yr. Pro $29/mo or $290/yr.
This article does not use a gold sitting as the forex example. Gold has its own public record. The example here stays EURUSD.
Who should skip
Skip this page if you wanted an EA auto-test or a tick-engine reconcile. This page is manual.
Skip it if you wanted a win-rate table. One punched EURUSD sitting does not give a win rate.
Skip it if you have not written the next four lines. Read A forex trading system first. With no rule, a backtest is only scrolling.

FAQ
Does TradingView Replay count as a manual backtest?
It counts as one layer. If the right side is already visible, that layer is hindsight. Stopping replay on the current bar, without dragging ahead, is closer to no hindsight. Browser replay still needs a network.
Why is the example EURUSD?
The public sitting with dates and OHLC you can point to is that euro-dollar record. This page does not pad it with another market.
Does the software score me?
No. Paper equity is not a grade. The replay rubric scores whether the rule was followed.
